The Sun and The Moon is a video opera telling an original creation myth.  The myth exists within a frame story centering around a storyteller and a child.  Both the myth and the frame story center around themes of parenthood, and how adults interact with the children they care about.  The work has an "arts and crafts" aesthetic, calling to mind the art projects created by children.  This is reflected especially in the animations and construction of the puppets.

The Sun and The Moon is Dawson's first venture both into opera and into work designed specifically for video.  Dawson created all puppets and animations, as well as filming and editing the project.  Dawson also composed the music and wrote the script.

The Sun and The Moon was created as an independent project by Dawson Atkin under the mentorship of Adam Lenz.
