The Woman in the Wallpaper
a 20-minute musical by Dawson Atkin and Maddy Noble
Charlotte isn't sick. She is a woman with opinions in 1890. No matter what her husband (who is also her doctor) has to say about it, Charlotte is definitively not sick. She is sick of being in the same room all the time, with the same hideous wallpaper. When she begins to see a woman in the walls, anything could happen.
This 20-minute musical radically reimagines The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins-Gilman, one of America's favorite short stories. Using its original ideas around women's health as a jumping-off point, the musical explores compulsory heterosexuality and women's independence through a dark supernatural comedy.
The Woman in the Wallpaper was developed at New York University. It has music by Dawson Atkin and book and lyrics by Maddy Noble.
